mcu au where tony gets de-aged, and suddenly the avengers have a sulky teenage stark and no idea how to Deal With Him
they call rhodes for help within two hours
when he shows up tony recognizes him immediately, even tho this man is 40+ yrs old and greying and much more serious-looking than his rhodey
he blurts out: “we’re still friends?”
“tones. you’re my best friend.”
and tony might be a skinny little runt of a teen but he still almost manages to knock rhodey over when he leaps right into his arms
The usual drive from where Rhodes was working at the time to the Avengers tower was about fifty minutes.
Rhodes is over there in twenty, five of which was spent trying to work out what a flustered Bruce was trying to say over the phone. Rhodes heard “problem” “Tony” and “It’s extremely urgent”. Not usually something Rhodes gets to concerned about hearing anymore. Not about Tony anyway.
But it was Bruce. It was the guy who literally trained himself to keep his cool in nearly every single situation. The only other guy that seemed to be able to handle Tony’s wacky ideas and even anchor him down from going too extreme at times. This was the first time Rhodes was called because Bruce couldn’t handle the situation. So badly he had to call in Rhodes.
Which means one of two things:
1. Tony was being an uncompromising idiot.
2. He was dying or worse.
Rhodes really hoped it was the former.
Well, Rhodes wasn’t completely wrong. Tony was being an uncompromising idiot.
A very childish uncompromising idiot.
apparently the Avengers had been handling a fugitive from the S.H.I.E.L.D. most wanted list. A villain who was able to figure out a way to concentrate and manipulate the biological timeline of a person. Before the last strike was blown, he had managed to get one last shot at Tony with his face revealed. Reverting him back to less than half his normal age. With only those Tony’s memories.
Bruce explained that Tony had freaked out, and said he didn’t believe Bruce when he explained that they were in “his future kind of.”. And claimed that he wouldn’t talk or budge from the spot until his parents arrived. When Bruce explained (vaguely for the younger Tony’s sake) that his parents would be unavailable, Tony said to get someone he knew. First Bruce thought to grab Steve, the famous Captain America, it was a stretch but Tony would technically know him. It was quite a shock to both of them how strongly Tony reacted. Rhodes winced, he knew that Tony had quite the problem with Steve when he was younger. He couldn’t even imagine that this situation would help with their relationship.
Bruce reluctantly had tried to compromise with Tony again and again. But Tony wouldn’t listen, he finally asked if Tony would listen to him if he got James Rhodes. Which Tony skeptically agreed to. Bruce left to make the call and now they were here.
Rhodes sighed “That sounds like Tony, so I guess it’s time for my grand entrance,” his hand shot up to stop Banner when he went for the door. “I think it might be better if it was just me, no offense.”
Bruce nodded and wandered away to the lab, where some security monitors were set up.
Rhodes pressed his lips into a fine line and opened the door.
“Grand entrance”? more like Grand-pa entrance. Rhodey couldn’t help but think as he walked into the slightly ransacked looking room and it’s one occupant. One Anthony Edward Stark, in a fresher version of Rhodeys old and raggedy M.I.T. sweatshirt, it only looked to be about a year old. He had no wrinkles, no melancholy look in his eyes, no arc reactor under his shirt at the only thing really keeping him alive.
Rhodey stared at him.
Tony Stared at him.
“That’s mine” Rhodey said.
Tony Stared at him.
“Hello? Learn to speak yet pip-squeak? You’re always going to be a pip-squeak by the way, that’s the only think I’m going to willingly tell you about your future.”
Tony cocked an eyebrow, and stared at him.
“Tones you gotta give me something here, come on–”
“Only Rhodey gets to call me Tones.” Young Tony speaks with agitation. “I call him Rhodey, he calls me Tones, It’s our thing. Don’t act like you’re him you fucking liar.”
Rhodey was taken aback, but quickly recovered and spotted a chair knocked over in front of Tony. He picked it up and sat across from him.
“Okay, 1. Everyone calls me Rhodey now, some people think it’s my actual name, your jackass future self made sure of that. 2. I’m not here to argue with an even more stubborn version of my college roommate, I think I would have a stroke, kinda amazing it hasn’t happened already honestly. 3.–and answer me honestly–why in the living Hell is this room so trashed right now?”
Of course Rhodey knew the answer before Tony even opened his mouth. “If you were Rhodey you would kno–”
“Captain America.”
Tonys eyes narrowed. “That old bozo in the green polo told you didn’t he?”
“Yeah, but he didn’t have to. What? You saw him come in and blew your lid?”
“GOD IT WAS SO IRRITATING! HE WOULDN’T REACT NO MATTER HOW MUCH I YELLED! I CAN SEE HOW HE AND DAD GOT ALONG!” Tony burst out. “AND IF YOU THINK YOU CAN TRICK ME INTO THINKING YOU’RE THE OLDER VERSION OF MY FRIEND YOU CAN THINK AGAIN!”
Rhodey stared at him again. focused and purposeful, he thinks for a second he saw Tony flinch. He relaxed his gaze a bit.
“May 29th, 1985, has it happened already?”
Tony shrugged, “wouldn’t you know?”
“For you, moron.”
Tony eyed him skeptically “What do you have to say about it?”
“I threw you the worst birthday party ever. You decided you didn’t want to come home for it and made up some lame excuse about “extra credit over spring break me and Rhodey were going to do.” While the truth was I had made up some crappy “extra credit I needed your help with” excuse to get you to stay while I planned a surprise party. I made you go get some supplies for our “model” we were going to build for school. while I set up. And it all went downhill from there, good enough?” Rhodey asked.
Tony’s gaze was so sharp it practically cut him. “No.”
Rhodey sighed. “Okay then, so this party was going to have a couple top of the class engineering students you seemed to like over, but they all got invited to this other party, as a joke they later told me, and all went instead without telling me until right before they left, which was about five minutes after you did. So it was just going to be you and me, which was okay. Except the one girl who was suppost to make the cake, Sonya, decided to take it to that party instead. So I had to bake a cake, set up for just the two of us, and I hadn’t even wrapped your present yet. It was an absolute mess. You came back before I was ready and I locked you outside of your own dorm room for half an hour. When I finally ready to let you in, you had gone around and was already climbing on the outer wall, halfway to our second story window, you’re insane by the way. I almost had a heart attack seeing this tiny barely 15 year old scaling the edge of an M.I.T. dorm building. So I ran outside and told you to climb down, then picked you up and carried you over my shoulder to right outside our dorm room with you complaining the whole time. I finally let you come in and see the overly decorated room with nobody in it and reluctantly said “surprise….?” The whole thing was a disaster already, and then I realized I had left the cake in the oven and ran over, just as the sprinkling system started. Good. Enough?”
Tony finally started to look more convinced. “And after?”
“And after we got bitched out by dorm manager, other dorm students, a couple teachers, and, worst of all, my mother.” Rhodey shuddered at the memory. “Defeated, I took you to this crappy ass pizza place that you had to pay half of because I spend all of my money on everything else. And when we got back to the room, that hardcover copy collection of The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy was waterlogged and also irreversibly damaged. But you took it anyway and read it all the time, probably just to humor me.” Rhodey stood up and marched over to a part of the room, shuffled around in a cupboard for a bit, then marched right back and handed Tony the most worn down copy of a waterlogged Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy the world had ever seen. the front cover was nearly torn off and several pages were nearly falling out of it. the first page was ripped in half, and seemed to have been superglued back it, and had a small note attacked to the first page.”
“To the wackiest, weirdest, most batshit insane child I have to spend my college years with,
you’re absolutely out of this world Tones, and drive me so crazy sometimes I want to fly off to space, But then I’d have to come right back and take you with me.
Don’t forget to bring a towel.
-James Rhodes-RhodeyTony was silent for a minute, then spoke. “Rhodey?”
Instinctively, Rhodes replied “Yeah?”
“I don’t turn into an old sap do I?”
“Tony,” Rhodey put a hand on the younger Tony Starks shoulder. “You are the sappiest man I have ever met. You eat sap for breakfast. You are so intensely sappy you have fused with it. You are one with the sap. You just don’t like people knowing that, but you can’t fool me.”
“Rhodey.”
“Hm?’
“You’re Rhodey.”
“The one and only. Did it seriously take you that long to figure it out?”
Tony stared at him and Rhodey knew exactly why. he was staring at the grey hair and the wrinkles around his eyes and mouth and looks so much more serious than him. but Tony couldn’t deny it any longer, It was Rhodey.
“I knew from the second I saw you, I didn’t want to accept it because I didn’t know what it meant. and you know I hate not knowing.”
“Don’t worry Tones, were going to figure this out. I’m going to get my old cranky ass Tony Stark back and you’ll…”
“I’ll just be a memory of a craptastic birthday.”
Rhodey didn’t reply.
“It really was the definition of craptastic, sure, it all kinda went to shit. But when you sent me out to get those supplies, I thought you had forgotten about my birthday. And when you didn’t let me in, It felt like you were trying to kick me out of your life and wasn’t having it so I left the tools out by the dorm door and stared scaling the wall. So when I found out that you were not only willing, but desperate to throw me a good party, I was happier than I ever could’ve been if it had all gone to plan, so that was fantastic.” Tony smiles sheepishly.
“Who is this lost child and where the fuck did Tony go?” Rhodey replied with a slanted grin.
“Rhodey?”
“Yeah?”
“So were friends for life?”’
Rhodey smiled. “Best friends.”
And suddenly the smaller Tony was practically cocooning Rhodey in a leaping hug.
